It all starts with a scribble and a spark
Every ChaBil design begins long before a fabric is cut or a button is sewn on. It starts at a big table covered in sketchbooks, pencils and colour charts. There’s usually a cup of coffee nearby, a playlist humming in the background, and a small idea that makes us smile - a curious little character, a memory from childhood, a soft colour palette inspired by the Danish seaside.
We open a fresh page and start doodling. Loose lines become shapes, shapes turn into tiny friends and playful patterns. This is the heart of ChaBil: original, in-house illustrations drawn by hand. They’re not picked from a catalogue or copied from a trend board - they grow out of our own stories and imagination.
Turning drawings into little adventures
Once a character or pattern feels right, we refine it. We experiment with different expressions, adjust the size of the print, and imagine how it will look when a baby is crawling, a toddler is twirling, or a child is fast asleep in their favourite pyjamas.
We ask ourselves:
-
Does this print feel joyful and timeless?
-
Will it still make you smile years from now in a photo album?
-
Does it tell a story that children can make their own?
Only when the answer is “yes” does the illustration move from paper to screen, where we prepare it for knitting, printing or embroidery on our organic baby clothes and children’s wear.
Choosing colours that feel like childhood
Colour is a big part of our design process. We’re drawn to soft, Scandinavian-inspired tones – gentle greens, rosy blush, warm neutrals and sky blues. We sit with our colour cards and imagine nurseries, bedrooms and everyday life: a blanket draped over a pram, pyjamas peeking out under a cardigan, a teddy tucked in next to a pillow.
Every collection is built around a calm, cohesive palette so pieces can be mixed, matched and handed down easily. We want our designs to feel playful, but never loud; colourful, but still soothing for sleepy evenings and slow mornings.
Fabrics that are kind to delicate skin
Beautiful illustrations don’t mean much if the fabric doesn’t feel good. That’s why we spend a lot of time choosing materials that are soft, safe and made to last. Many of our styles are crafted in organic cotton and OEKO-TEX® certified fabrics, carefully selected to be gentle on sensitive baby skin.
We test how the fabric behaves when washed, stretched and loved day after day. Will the knit keep its shape? Does the inside feel smooth against tiny arms and legs? Can this piece survive crawling, climbing and countless trips through the washing machine? Only the best fabrics make it into a ChaBil garment.
Designed for real moments with real children
In the studio, we constantly picture real life: a baby wriggling during a nappy change, a toddler insisting on dressing themselves, a tired parent doing laundry late at night. These moments shape our design decisions.
We add practical details like:
-
Easy-to-open buttons and zips
-
Comfortable waistbands and soft seams
-
Room for movement, growth and layering
Our goal is simple: clothes that feel as good as they look, for both children and parents.
From studio table to your home
When a design is finally ready, we work with trusted partners to bring it to life. Samples arrive back at the studio where we check every detail - the placement of a print, the feel of the fabric, the neatness of each stitch. If something isn’t perfect, it goes back for adjustment.
Only then do we photograph the pieces, write the product stories and prepare them for the website. By the time a ChaBil blanket, pyjama set or teddy reaches your home, it has travelled through many caring hands and countless design decisions.
Why we share our process
For us, “behind the scenes” isn’t just a fun peek into the studio. It’s a way of showing you what you’re really buying:
-
Original, in-house illustrations
-
Thoughtful Scandinavian design
-
Organic and certified materials
-
Pieces made to be worn, loved and passed on
When you choose ChaBil, you’re not just picking out children’s clothes. You’re choosing stories drawn by hand, stitched into fabric, and ready to become part of your family’s everyday moments and memories.
